Smooth Green Snake
Opheodrys vernalis
42.6277, -74.6513
Field Notes
Description:
Small green snakes with a white underside that may be bordered with some yellow. Most don't grow over 20 inches. Also known as "grass snakes." Their diet consists mostly of invertebrates.
Notes:
Smooth green snakes are, as their name implies, green. However, when they die, the yellow pigments in their scales break down very quickly, leaving them blue. This one was found in our driveway yesterday. We're unsure of the cause of death, as the damage was very minimal. It’s the very first smooth green I’ve ever seen. I’m hoping I’ll see some live ones this year! There are very few good photos of deceased smooth green snakes on the internet, so I thought I’d share this bit of info.
