Field Notes

Description:

An adult male and female Ring-necked Duck during the breeding or mating season.

Habitat:

In open area of the Otter Tail River in and around Otter Tail County in NW Minnesota.

Notes:

The forth image shows the male throwing his head back over his back. I believe this may be part of their courting ritual but can't say for certain. I've also noticed Common Goldeneyes and Mergansers doing something similar at this time of the year and its only the males I've observed doing this when there's a female nearby. I also have a video but haven't uploaded it to YouTube yet.
