Field Notes

Description:

A small butterfly with slim, triangular wings. The upper side of the male's wings is mostly orange with the margins being dark brown. Females have 2 forms: Upperside of normal form is duller and has less orange than the male; underside of hindwing is orange with purple-gray at the inner margin. The upperside of the "pocahontas" form is purple-black with some dull white spots on the forewing with the underside being a purple-black color with an obscured pattern.

Habitat:

Spotted on the side of an access road that bordered a woodland at Greenwich Audubon
