Field Notes

Description:

32" long
Stout body, duck-like
Summer- back black with large white spots, head, neck, and bill black, white bands on neck, eyes red.
Winter- Slaty above, white below, bill slaty, Bill heavy, pointed.
In Flight- legs extend beyond tail.
Vocal- Quavering laughter, yodeling, heard mainly on summer nights.

Habitat:

Summer and migration- lakes.
Winter- coastal bays, ocean.
April- Oct. in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine.
Sept.- April- Entire coast.
