Eastern newt

This is an eastern newt in it's third stage. Unlike many amphibians, which have a bipartite lifecycle, this species has an unusual tripartite lifecycle. Their larval stage is spent in water, then they emerge and live on land in their red eft stage (they are brightly colored red at that point). Once they are mature they turn olive green, develop a flattened tail and return to the water for the rest of their lives. This is a male in breeding condition, but unfortunately for him he was found in a vernal pool by himself. Hope some ladies join you soon little guy!
