Field Notes

Description:

The common moorhen is nearly black all over with a yellow-tipped red bill. Has a red forehead. Thin line of white along sides. Yellowish green legs. Size about 14". Female same as male. Young ride on backs of adults. Also known as mud hen or pond chicken.

Habitat:

The common moorhen likes marshes and lakes and walks on floating vegetation. Spotted in a marsh on St Marks National Wildlife Refuge in St Marks, Florida.
