Field Notes

Description:

Black ladybirds, about 5mm in size, with 6 red dots on the elytra (2 in front and 4 at the rear). These ladybirds were also seen in the company of Six-spotted Lady Beetle (Cheilomenes sexmaculata) - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/21668268, and mating with a Variable Lady Beetle (Coelophora inaequalis) - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/22114118.

I thought it was the same as Orange-spotted Ladybird - Orcus australasiae (synonym Parapriasus australasiae). But the Australian species has 4 spots in front and 2 at the rear -http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_ladybirds/Orange-spotted.htm.

Habitat:

Backyard.
