Florida Ivory Millipede
Chicobolus spinigerus
29.1945, -82.1308
Field Notes
Description:
A Florida specialty, coming in two "flavors"... either actual black with white stripes and white feet (resembling a zebra with hundreds of little feet), or ours; a rich deep chocolate brown with creamy stripes and feet.
Either way, these little millipedes are gorgeous, and fascinating, and harmless.
Habitat:
Native to hammock areas of Florida. Somewhat common, but not 'everywhere'.
Notes:
This specimen lives at the Ocala Discovery Center, in Ocala florida. We have named it "Pugsly"! He is a "goodwill ambassador" for all creepy-crawlies of Florida, and participates in educational activities.
Pugsley was captive-bred, and purchased at Ken the Bug Guy. I do not normally collect creatures from the wild, especially unusual things like this.
