Serin
Serinus serinus
46.2542, 6.11151
Field Notes
Description:
This is the smallest European finch, 11-12 cm in length, slightly smaller than sparrow with proportionally large head and conic small bill. Male (pictured here) is conspicuously bright yellow below, with bold bright yellow markings on head and neck. Above, it is greenish-brown, but heavily streaked. Female (which I saw, but did not capture) is more discreet in colouring.
Habitat:
This series of pics are part of my "From my window" series - seen in the backyard of our residence building, at outskirts of a small urban center in Geneva lake valley. The backyard counts a number of deciduous trees and shrubs, most of them spontaneous and local, some planted. The backyard neighbours a meadow (used for producing hay) and a lowland deciduous (mainly oak and beech) forest, and some other agricultural fields.
Notes:
During winters, the tree where this guy is resting is a hot-spot for my "from my window" bird-watching: we maintain number (over 40) of feeders around the garden, but this tree hides the main (and regularly replenished) food and water reserve in the garden... and of course, it is the most visited, and therefore the most spectacular one. During winter tme, they attract a number of species I see seldom otherwise. By the way, this Serin here, is not rare bird around here, but this was the first time I saw it on my feeders.
