Scheltopusik
Pseudopus apodus
32.0835, 34.9593
Field Notes
Description:
A legless lizard. One marker to differentiate it from snakes is the eyelids. This specimen was remarkably hospitable when I observed it. A keen observer will notice the remnants of legs (and other markers such as ventral scales) which incidentally are also a wonderful testament to evolutionary change.
I spotted this one during inspection of Second Temple burial caves in the outskirts of Israel's central district.
