I'm with you guys, my feild guide is mighty helpful but not so much for these type of birds. When out in the bush we always call them a LBB or Little Brown Bird until we get a closer look at photos etc. Some like this one still are hard.
Yeah i agree Kram. Luckily for me my father has been a ranger with national parks for 10+ years so he is always able to help me with identification
I find smaller birds (not parrots or aerials) of bush and open country are always super hard to distinguish from one another
Yeah as soon as i saw the photo i thought grey shrike thrush, when i checked my field guide the illustration showed colouring slightly different but taking colour variation into consideration everything else seemed to match, ie beak shape, size etc. As reliable as field guides are i suppose that's one thing they can't entirely account for
Thanks for your in depth input Liam. I agree with you. I have always swayed towards the Grey Shrike-thrush. I will edit spotting now. Hooray!!!
I believe the white superlora area is somewhat distinctive for Gray Shrikethrush. Gender and individual variation should account for the drab plumage. Jacky Winter will have a noticeably slimmer bill and white edges on the tertials.
OK Phil. Let's give it a bit more time and I'll go with the majority.
I see a lot more of a rusty brownish color in all the photos of grey shrike thrushes I see. I see the similarities but I have to stick with my ID.
The colour in the feild guide is throwing me also Kram
The grey shrike thrush has a black line at the back of the eye on the suggested web site. That pushes me in that direction. Have a look at that Phil. http://wwwbirdsinbackyards.net/species/
Both ID's have merit but I'm still not totally convinced. There appears to be a bit of buff on the underside. Do you think this would match either the shrike thrush or the flycatcher?
I think it looks like the Jacky Winter as well http://bird.net.au/bird/images/c/cb/Jacky_Winter-341.jpg... But what's throwing me is the illustrations in my field guides show brownish plumage
I was thinking this was some kind of flycatcher. Turns out this used to be known as the Brown Flycatcher but is not closely related to true flycatchers.
If you read this it says that plumage can vary throughout it's range http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/Colluricincla-harmonica and google images show quite different plumage amongst them. This could explain why it doesn't match the field guide pictures 100% if it is the shrike thrush.
My first thought was grey shrike thrush but i'm not 100% on that, have a look and see what you think. I'll keep looking
That's right Kram! I have checked 2 different feild guides and still have no idea. Hopefully someone will know. I'm usually pretty good with birds but this one stumped me. NEW Species HAhaha!
Great spot! Not sure what it is, I've even flipped through a field guide
