Description:
Perennial woody vine. Long spindly vine from rhizomes. Blooms before it leaves out. Blooms are old man's pipe shape with purple veins. Though it looks like a carnivorous plant, it is harmless. Insects may get trapped but most get out after they have picked up pollen and will transport the pollen to other flowers.
The flowers are the mainstay of the Pipevine catepilar that feeds off the leaves and use the flower as a place undergo metamorphosis.
Habitat:
Riparian and moist wooded areas.
