We get a lot of these in our open kitchen. Someone told me they're lubber grasshoppers but... I don't know.

This is a beautiful female Katydid. I am not sure of the species in your area though. You can tell this is a female because she has an ovipositor (pointy appendage that is at the end of the abdomen). One easy way to tell katydids from grasshoppers is to look at the antennae. Grasshoppers have shorter, thicker antennae while katydids have long, thread-like antennae.
