This bot is a female rabbit bot, and not a squirrel bot. They do look similar. The small faint dots of red in the eyes of these photos are only seen in the N. American rabbit bots. Also C. emasculator would have yellowish hairs on the last tergite (farthest rear segment of rump). This is for sure C. cuniculi, which is found primarily in FL and a few records from GA. It uses marsh (muck) rabbits, Sylvilagus palustris, and S. floridanus as the host mammals. It is relatively rare, and when Sabrosky, C. W. (1986) published his monograph on all the N. American bots, he could only find 24 specimens (6 male, 18 female) in museum collections in the US. From these records it appears to have 2 generations a year, with adults most common in April/May and Oct/Nov/Dec.
Thanks so much for the ID, Cindy. I searched BugGuide for seemingly ever and missed it.
