Field Notes

Description:

Adults are mainly black on the upper parts and wings, with a white back and white spotting on the wings; the throat and belly are white. The Hairy Woodpecker is larger than the downy woodpecker, they also have longer beaks and tales than the downy woodpecker. The male has the red splash of feathers on his head.

Habitat:

Mature deciduous forests.
