Field Notes

Description:

Wasp or hornets.
Locals call them bees and yellowjackets. They like picnic food, but have suprisingly never attacked the picnicers.

Habitat:

While removing an awning in our backyard we found a popular, well protected place with about 10 nests- some old, some new.

Notes:

The largest of these nests was about 6 inches long and 4 inches wide.
Since removing the green fiberglass awning none of the insects have rebuilt.
