Field Notes

Description:

Pair of Red-rumped Parrots. They are slim, elegant, moderate-sized parrots approximately 28 cm (11 in) in length. The male's plumage is a bright emerald-green with yellow underparts, a brick-red rump and blue highlights on the wings and upper back. The female's plumage is less vibrant, with pale olive underparts, dull green wings and back and blue-black wingtips. The characteristic red rump is only found in the male.

Habitat:

The Red-rumped Parrot is found in open grasslands or lightly timbered plains, as well as along watercourses and in mallee farmlands with access to water. It's a common bird of south-eastern Australia, particularly in the Murray-Darling Basin.

Notes:

Spotted this pair while out on the golf course this morning. The difference in colour between males and females is quite obvious in this shot.

Nice. I think I like the second shot the best - you can see the red rump. : ) That's a beautiful female though, she's so ashy-looking.
