Description:

Hawk hovering over Sydney suburb, close to a wooded park with harbour. Soaring high in spirals, reddish brown but difficult to discern full colouring due to bright sunlight.

Habitat:

Suburban Sydney, near parkland and water

Despite the dark silhouette, there are some other great indicators: wing shape, tail length and shape and the striping and hood all point toward Falco peregrinus macropus! You are very lucky to have this bird as a regular visitor!
I considered peregrine falcon as the head colouring is similar, but it's so hard to say when a bird is silhouetted against the sky! He does fly over my house occasionally so I may need to wait and see if I can get a better shot next time. Thanks for your suggestion!
Great Spotting! This looks like a peregrine falcon to me! There is an Australian specie/sub specie.
