Trashline orb weaver

This small spider (probably about 1/4") was found on a large web (1.5 feet diameter) in my garden. He sat quietly in the center of the web, looking like a hermit crab with all his legs in the center of his body and a body that looks like a shell. He moved around once and I was able to get the above pictures.
