Field Notes

Description:

Looks like a white carrot. The root smells a bit woody and a bit like radish or turnip but not horseradish. The leaves look like carrot but the root doesn't smell like a carrot. Found growing wild in a mountain field that may be part of a long ago(100 years or more) abandoned farm.

Is this edible?

Habitat:

Meadow

Species ID Suggestions

Chervil

Anthriscus cerefolium

will try to look up into it some more ;)
Just checked; definitely not chervil. No anise flavor. :(
Ursula - I think this may be chervil! I will have to go back to sample a taste of the leaves to confirm; my sample was gone when I found your post today. Thanks!
p.s. chervil looks a lot like carrot leaves, read here: http://theepicentre.com/spice/chervil/
Rebecca - thanks; it's a mystery. There were quite a few - scores - in an area about 50'X 50'; was wondering if its edible.
Cilantro that has rounder leaves. Too many frond for most parsley. Root systems looks tuberous but not carrot like enough. Leaves don't look right for horseradish either. Looks like a type of milkweed wildflower I've seen but without a bloom too many maybes. Wish I could help more.
I just realized that the photo of the root didn't post. Now attached.
The leaves look like carrot - but the root, shaped like a very narrow carrot, is white and smells a bit like radish.
But I agree it looks more like wild carrot leaves.
you mean the leaves? it looks a lot like carrot leaves. when you pulled it out, what did you get or did you just picked up the leaves?
