Field Notes

Description:

Distinctive mud chambers built by this wasp that preys on spiders. Multiple spiders are placed in each chamber for the larval wasp to feed on.

Habitat:

This nest was on a maple tree in a yard with forest all around.

Notes:

It's unusual to see one of these nests in such an exposed location. It was very easy to see especially being built on the white lichen growing on the tree trunk.
