Probably is gravel - it actually does look just like the stuff next to the wood! Besides, the leftover caterpillar stuff is usually inside the end of the cocoon. :)
Thanks for the input, Lauren. Could be just pieces of gravel stuck on the outside?
Might be a long-haired caterpillar cocoon with the remains of the larval skin and head capsule on the outside?
