Field Notes

Description:

Their color and pattern can be highly variable, but they tend to be a dark brown color and have a thick body. This guy was pretty plain and didn't have the blotching like some do. Despite the variability, cottonmouths always have a dark chocolate colored eye stripe extending to the back of the head.

Habitat:

They are in the southeastern US near water. We were walking across a bridge over a creek, and looked down and this guy was sitting on the bank in a sandy area just staring at us.
