Field Notes

Description:

A mostly black butterfly with yellow along the wing edges and a blue iridescent band on the back of the wings, making this a female.

Habitat:

Found in a mostly oak dominated forest, it was on a thistle flower in the Asteraceae family.

Thanks Cammie! I guess it being a female threw me off since it didn't look like most of the pictures I had seen. I'm slowly learning my butterflies though :)
You are correct, it is a Black Swallowtail! This one is a female; the males have another line of yellow patterning instead of the blue. Beautiful shots! =)
