Field Notes

Description:

Medium to large ducks the hen is uniformly brown with black markings over the body and a brownish to orangs bill and legs. The drake has an iridescent green head, white neck ring, yellow to greenish yellow bill. Breast is brown top and sides gray with black rump and white tail feathers.

Habitat:

Found near even the smallest body of water, such as a roadside ditch, and much lager bodies such as lakes or rivers this bird takes advantage of it's adaptability to live just about any temperate environment.

Notes:

This is the most common duck in Illinois.
