Field Notes

Description:

As its common name implies, this moth is purplish gray in color with lighter brown areas. Wingspan 30-35 mm.

Habitat:

Range is Nova Scotia to Florida, west to Texas, north to Saskatchewan. This one was photographed in a deciduous forest in Edgefield County, SC.

Notes:

Larvae are reddish brown, heavily mottled and banded with purple. Food is various conifers, primarily pine, also spruce, tamarack (larch), and fir.
