Field Notes

Description:

They have reddish-brown colored bodies with checkered patterns down the back, and a light dorsal stripe. This guy was only about 4 inches long, but was incredibly feisty and kept rearing up like a cobra and striking at us. He probably thought it was threatening, but it was incredibly adorable. He's my lifer Brown Snake :)

Habitat:

This subspecies is found from southern Minnesota, down through east Texas and into Mexico. This guy was in the ditch next to the road. I was walking around looking for whatever I could find, and I saw something hop. So I started digging around to find it when I turned up this guy under some leaves.
