Witches butter
Tremalla mesenterica, witches butter
37.0297, -119.411
Field Notes
Description:
I found witches butter amongst fallen and dead trees growing on undersides of stumps. Tremella mesenterica is part of the tremellaceae family and is edible but not much desired because of its rubbery texture. I must add this particular mushroom has a tremendous amount of healing properties, such as cancer-fighting agents. Although I find it rubbery the Eastern cultures have been using it as medicine for respiratory issues four centuries.
Habitat:
Found In March through April commonly on
undersides of Fallen spruce trees in my areas next to streams and shaded areas.
Notes:
This species was found in Central California in Northwest America and I find it at about 2 to five thousand feet in in mid April.
