Field Notes

Description:

A large flying mammal occurring in large flocks(?) around inner Melbourne. Although considered by some to be threatened, they survive well in suburbs of large cities where fruit trees are common. This colony has 50 000 individuals and perching by day on the same old growth Eucalypts, their claws can do serious damage to trees.

Thanks Shanna Many farmers and particularly orchardists have problems with these clever creatures. They used to threaten old growth trees in the Botanical Gardens but have been pushed up river to Yarra Bend. Now they 'nudge' them, keeping the colony tight and preventing them from spreading.
Lovely pics, Martin. These guys are getting such bad PR lately.
Thank you Gerardo and thank you EnvUnlimited.
