Field Notes

Description:

Lace monitors can grow to 2 metres in length, all are dark grey with mottled markings (individual markings vary with spots, thin & thick bands or bars & blotches) in white, cream, yellow lighter grey. The only lizard with a forked tongue, enlarged black strong claws used for defence & climbing. Diet varies from small insects, carrion, small birds to small mammals, other reptiles & eggs. Often the female will lay eggs in a cavity she excavates in the side of a termite mound. This one was close to 1.5m long.

Habitat:

Found throughout many habitats in eastern Australia. This on in dry woodland in north east NSW after it investigated what was on offer around the garden & home. Typically when spotted it scurried up the nearest tree that would take its weight.

Thanks Tom15. Yes, quite a large lizard, made a lot of noise crashing through the dry undergrowth.
