Completely black except for small amount of white on the underside of chin.

Curious as to whether it was a racer or rat snake.

Habitat:

Umstead Park, Raleigh, NC

Notes:

fairly non-agressive except for vibrating tail in leaves, upon approach.

Species ID Suggestions

black rat snake

Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta

Comments (1)

I can't tell by the photo, but if the mid-dorsal scales are keeled then my identification as a black rat is positive. Otherwise, I'm going by the description and comments as to its behavior.
