The local Red-shouldered Hawk plunged down into my compost pile to grab what I believe is a shrew, but not sure which kind.

Next time I see one I'll try to capture it for a photo. That would make a nice picture.
That's awesome! I'm hoping you can get photos of them soon, I'd love to see them! And hopefully you don't get photos of them in a talon of a raptor like this haha
Ashley, thanks for the ID! I've seen Star-nosed Mole a couple times running across the road, but no photos of one yet.
Looks like this guy to me, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinereus_shrew While looking for small mammals in Mass, I discovered you have star-nosed moles there. You need to find one!
