Long-Eared Owl
Asio otus

Field Notes
Description:
The Long-Eared Owl can often be found in the same range as the similar-looking Short-Eared Owl (the long ear tufts are an easy way to tell the two species apart). At about a foot tall, Long-Eared Owls are medium in size.
Notes:
Like with all owls, it is very important to give these owls their space and not to approach too close. 20ft is generally a good MINIMUM distance if you are ever unsure about how close to approach an owl or other raptor. (Note: The more space between the better! Even just watching an animal causes it stress, even if it does not appear threatened). This photo was taken with a telephoto lens, to ensure that I was an appropriate distance from the owl.
