Field Notes

Description:

About 12 cm long, a fierce predator of small insects, lizards, snakes and mice. They typically look out for prey from a perch and fly down towards the ground to capture them. Like other shrikes, they impale prey on thorns. Hence the name butcher bird.

Habitat:

Dry shrubs and open fields.
