Description:
Small swallow with blue wings, tail, and crown. It has blue and deep red markings on its' face, and has orangish brown underparts. It has a small black bill.
Habitat:
These swallows can be found throughout North, Central, and South America. They can be found in a variety of habitats such as meadows, fields, ponds, under and around bridges, and barns.
Notes:
I recently visited Bandera, Texas and was able to get a few shots of these swallows. I was excited because usually when I see them they are in flight. Not the best shots but happy to have them!
Fun Facts: 1. Grown siblings and older juveniles often help feed new clutches. 2. The impact of hat making on Barn swallows led to an editorial written by George Bird Grinnell which in turn led to the founding of the Audubon Society. 3. Legend has it that Barn swallows stole fire from the gods to give to people. Angering the gods a firebrand was thrown at a swallow singeing its' middle tail feathers.
