Field Notes

Description:

Very similar to Western Grebe, but beak is brighter yellow; and the black "cap" does not cover the eye. This is a large bird, about crow size.

Habitat:

Swimming way out in the middle of Prospect Lake, an artificial reservoir in Memorial Park, Colorado Springs. The lake is surrounded by lawns, residential neighborhoods, and some commercial buildings.

Notes:

The day was very windy and the human activity forced most waterfowl into the middle of the lake.
