Hooded crow
Corvus cornix
45.4985, 13.9846
Field Notes
Description:
Common eurasian grey-and-black corvid. Except for the color, looks exactly like its first cousin, the all-black Carrion crow. About 50 cm in length.
Habitat:
This is a common resident in many urban and rural settings, and has no prefered habitat, it can be seen everywhere. Here, somewhere in between Slovenia and Croatia, along the highway.
Notes:
As explained, common eurasian species, very close genetically to Corvus corone (Carrion crow) - it was longtemps considered as eastern subspecies of Carrion crow. The two species share Eurasia - C. corone (Carrion crow) in the west of Europe; and the extreme east of that landmass. Hooded crow occupies much larger territory, from Italy-Germany to China.
