Field Notes

Description:

A little confusing, this one appears to have reddish throat, maybe one long tail feather, but could be a wing feather. I was toying between Barn and Pacific Swallow. There are also reddish tinges on the body sides which suggest it could be Striated or Barn Swallow tytleri sub-species. There is a pale patch behind the eye, is it perhaps something else? Pity I didn't get a second picture.

I've checked some of my other Pacific Swallow pictures from a similar angle and at rest the wing tips and tail tips are all about the same length or the wings fractionally longer. Because the outer wing primaries are so flat they can look like tail streamers at right angles. I think the length can rule out Pacific. The patterning on the vent is a little confusing, it looks like the reverse of a Pacific but not like Striated or Barn, unless its a juvenile.
Tough call - I might lean towards Barn over Pacific due to the long tail feather(s). I am not sure how to eliminate Striated from this photo.
