Field Notes
Description:
Probably the most subdued markings of any duck that I know. Greyish brown overall, more tawny on the back, black tail coverts and white belly, pale chestnut on wings. Both sexes have white inner secondaries that may show as small patch on swimming bird and identify the species in flight.
Habitat:
ponds, lakes, coastal BC and parts of Alaska, to southern California and across the southern states.
Notes:
A dabbling duck species, this Gadwall has pond weeds hanging from his bill.
