Field Notes

Description:

The Anna's Hummingbirds of BC are celebrating Spring in style! The males are sitting on the tops of trees and shrubs and singing their hearts out to attract females and lay claim to their territories.

Notes:

Anna's Hummingbirds have a song that is long in comparison to other hummingbirds (~10 seconds). A unique fact about the Anna's Hummingbird is the dive that they perform to attract females and to scare away rivals. The males will rise up to 30m in the air before executing a steep dive downwards, stopping centimeters away from their recipient and making a loud chirping sound with their tail feathers.
