Field Notes

Description:

Sometimes I get a little tired of finding red-backed salamanders. Turn over a few logs and you'll probably find one. I found 22 today. But, I will admit that I never get tired of the juveniles - they are so cute. Juvenile red-backeds look just like adults, but they're smaller. This one is probably about a year old. Red-backed salamanders are solely terrestrial - the adults lay eggs under logs and there is direct development (no larval stage).
