Field Notes

Description:

Very large, tall, wading bird with distinctive appearance as shown.

Habitat:

At least three of these birds were slowly stalking around the edge of Prospect Lake, a large artificial reservoir in Memorial Park near downtown Colorado Springs. The lake is stocked with trout, which no doubt attracted these predators.

Notes:

Great Blue Herons seem to becoming adapted to an urban lifestyle, very tolerant of close approach by people.
