Field Notes

Description:

A surprisingly attractive mushroom with a creamy brown cap. the largest was about 90mm wide. The caps had darker umbos, undulating translucent margins with striations. The cap surface had a slight granular texture.
The gills were white and notched. The stipe had a brown stain, a wispy and fragile annulus. The feature that stood out most was the twisted stipe ( pics 5 &6).
These mushrooms grew in clumps. Pic #3 looked like it was straight out of a Toulouse-Lautrec painting !

Habitat:

Regenerating bush - open dry sclerophyll woodland. Arising perhaps from buried wood.

Notes:

My thanks to gully.moy for the ID

Honey Mushrooms

Armillaria mellea

gully.moy, Thanks for suggesting an ID for this mushroom. I will look for Armillaria species in Australia. I don't think we have A.melea here although Michael Kuo's specimen resembles my spotting somewhat. I am a little confused about the really delicate and wispy annulus. "The classic honey mushroom, Armillaria mellea, turns out to be limited to roughly the eastern half of North America, from about the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast and the East Coast--and perhaps to northern California, where it has been reported. It usually grows in clusters on hardwoods, but is occasionally found on conifers. It has a fairly smooth cap, a sturdy ring on the stem, and fused stem bases that are tapered to points. Under the microscope, it has basidia that are not clamped at their bases" Source: Michael Kuo http://www.mushroomexpert.com/armillaria_mellea.html
