Field Notes

Description:

Playful looking and beautiful, female spider. She has bright orange on her head and abdomen. Her face and legs are gray with black stripes. She has a light colored heart pattern with dark markings on the abdomen. The chelicerae are blue/green although it's difficult to see in this series. She had a bunch of hair and fuzzies on her so I picked it off after taking this series. This lady is gravid (pregnant) with a large abdomen although don't tell her that :)

Habitat:

Gutter drain on house in front yard. This species is found in California.

Notes:

Jumping spiders accurately sense distances by comparing a blurry version of an image with a clear one, a method called image defocus.
