Japanese Red Fox
Vulpes vulpes japonica
36.3546, 138.671
Field Notes
Description:
The endemic red fox sub species of Japan. This one a medium sized fox with reddish fur over the head and shoulders paling to silver grey over the hind quarters. White under the muzzle and throat continuing throughout the under parts. Characteristic bushy tail and pointed muzzle with dark amber eyes.
Habitat:
Found crossing a country road in early morning near Karuizawa on the island of Honshu, Japan, in deciduous forest.
Notes:
This fox sub looks a little different from the foxes I saw later in Hokkaido. I put this down to environmental factors as it was quite a bit warmer on Honshu. They are in fact separate sub species but I cannot find any data describing any physiological differences between them.
