Sphinx Moth
Adhemarius dariensis
16.7128, -92.6127
Field Notes
Description:
A really big Sphinx moth with a length of 5 cm and a wing span of 11 cm.
I've never seen this species before. It looks like it is wearing a backpack. The underside of the wings and body was almost a uniform greenish-yellow. The hind wing was pink, black and pale orange. Family: Sphingidae,
Subfamily: Smerinthinae.
Habitat:
Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
Notes:
See the spotting of Adhemarius gannascus, a different species spotted at about 1000 meters lower in elevation from A. dariensis.
