Geastrum triplex? Collared Earthstar
There are also other Earthstar genera such as Astraeus
thanks! I had never heard of earthstars, and it did have three rays. I will upload my camera photos, can see more of it than from the iPod camera, would be great to have an idea of what species it might be.

It's an Earthstar more than a Puffball. Check out Geastrum species.
