Field Notes

Description:

A large distinctive brush-footed butterfly with a rich chocolate brown colour and white spots. Euploea core is distributed from India and Sri Lanka to south China, and via the Malay peninsula to Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Java, Bali, New Guinea and Australia.

Habitat:

A suburban garden planted with SE Queensland natives, including acacias.

Notes:

This beautiful specimen kept me company while I was gardening.
The genus Euploea is very distinctive, with all of the known species dark brown in colour; most have a double band of white spots on the underside of the wings, as well as tiny white spots on the sides of the thorax.
