Field Notes

Description:

Very hairy and fuzzy moth of about 2 cm. The legs were also very hairy. Brown and grey pattern. The males are winged with large feathery antennae (unfortunately not visible here). The females have short wings, wait for the males to find them on their cocoon and then lay their eggs on the cocoon. If I see another, I´ll add a photo with the antennae. Family Lymantriidae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

I have seen the larvae before, they are very beautiful but have stinging hairs. This link has photos of the female, cocoon and the larva.
