Description:

Make sure you watch the video of the penguins jumping onto the ice! Quite a "classic" looking penguin, with a black back and top of the head, white face and belly and a thin black strip under the beak. When we encountered these in the sea ice, they were wonderful to watch as they shot out of the water like rockets onto the surrounding ice floes! And yes, that is an iceberg covered in penguin poop in pic #2.

Habitat:

Most commonly encountered at sea, circumpolar distribution.

Notes:

One of my favourite penguins, and I'm so glad I was able to capture this behaviour on video. They were pretty much the only penguin species we encountered here, save for a few lone gentoos. We did not go far south enough for Emperors and Adelies.
